Modica’s most famous son, Salvatore Quasimodo, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature once described the historical centre of the town as “a web of interwoven hoses which whisper to each other”. This historical centre, the imposing and striking baroque cathedaral of S. Giorgio, the numerous other churches and elegant builings all combine to remind the visitor of Modica’s past as a powerful county: a past which the town can be proud of.

The sea and beaches of the coastline recall the nearby african continent. Together with the historical centres of Modica, Scicli and Ragusa, they have attracted the attentio of filmmakers and advertising executives who, on a increaingly regular basis, choose these area as locations for their productions. The successful Italian TV seriers “ Il commissario Montalbano” is only one recent example.

And the one must not forget the countryside, which is dotted with dry stone walls, ploughed fields, deep gorges and valleys of which Cava Ispica, Pantalica and Cava Grande del Cassibile are the most alaborate example.

Modica is ideally situated for daytrips to Noto, Siracusa, Caltagirone, Piazza Armerina, Malta and numerous other tourist locations.
